BEFORE ARRIVAL
Match the Boat to the House
Ask about dock depth, covered clearance, lift restrictions and the approximate boat size the property can accommodate. Water access varies by cove, season and property.
If you are renting, compare pickup location with the house before reserving. A marina that is convenient by boat may still be a long drive from the rental.
- Confirm trailer parking before towing to the home.
- Do not assume a private lift is available for guest use.
- Save the property address and dock instructions before leaving cell service.

Plan Ramps and Fuel Before the First Ride
Do not wait until the fuel gauge is low to decide where to stop. Save the nearest fuel dock and an alternate, then identify the closest public ramp if you are trailering.
The Lake Gaston Day Use Area includes a public ramp near the dam. Other public and commercial ramps serve different sections of the lake.

Keep the Plan Safe and Relaxed
Check weather, daylight and local navigation conditions before leaving the dock. Assign a sober operator, carry correctly sized life jackets and review the route with everyone aboard.
Hydrilla is present in Lake Gaston. Virginia DWR asks boaters to remove it from boats, motors and trailers before leaving so it is not spread to other waters.
